Forney Hutchinson III, MD CHARLOTTE - Dr. Forney Hutchinson III died at home in Charlotte, North Carolina on Sunday, January 20, 2013, surrounded by family; after a multi-year struggle with prostate cancer. He was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on August 25, 1942, the son of Forney Hutchinson, Jr. and Dorothy Thompson Hutchinson. After graduating from Thomas Edison High School in 1960, he attended Harvard University
where he lettered on the varsity crew team and received his A.B. in 1964. He entered Duke Medical School, graduating in 1968. After two years in the Duke General Surgery Program, he was commissioned into the U.S. Army
as an Orthopaedic surgeon and from 1970-1972 was assigned to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, which was a Vietnam Casualty and Evacuation Center. He left the army with the rank of Major and returned to Duke for his formal Orthopaedic training from 1972-1976. In 1976 he joined the Miller Orthopaedic Clinic in Charlotte, which became OrthoCarolina. He concentrated on hand and elbow surgery until his retirement in 2008. He particularly enjoyed teaching and learning with Orthopaedic residents and received numerous teaching awards. He was chief of the Orthopaedic Department at Carolinas HealthCare System for 15 years and was selected as an oral examiner for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1994. He served on-call as an Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeon for 30 years and as a consulting surgeon for the Carolina Panthers. He also served as contributing editor to the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. Volunteer work was an important part of Dr. Hutchinson's career, including trips to Africa and Central America. In addition, he devoted substantial time to serving indigent patients at CHS. Forney was an avid reader and he particularly enjoyed snow skiing, scuba diving and fly fishing. He also loved his pets, Remi and Zoe. He is survived by his beloved wife Valeria, his two daughters Karen H. Ridout (husband Tyler) and Ellen H. Johnson (husband Carter), all of Charlotte, and his sister Nancy Gasen (husband Jim) of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
