Joe Marlin Riggs CHARLOTTE - Joe Marlin Riggs, PhD, of Charlotte, died peacefully Monday evening, June 10, 2013, at his home. He was born April 9, 1944, in Mt. Carmel, Il, to the late Marlin Riggs and Patricia Comiskey Riggs. Dr. Riggs was a graduate of the University of Illinois
, with a degree in Spanish and completed his graduate work in Linguistics, at Indiana University
. He worked as an ESL Transition Teacher, SIFE at the International Center at Smith Family Center, CMS, for the past 3 years. Dr. Riggs taught ESL for 28 years, in the CMS System. Family man, Joe, loved building boats and playing the autoharp & was an active and long-time member of the Charlotte Folk Society. He was a Veteran of the Vietnam War
and continued his service until 1982, in the Army Reserves. Surviving are his wife, Ellie Hayes Riggs; daughter, Jessica Lannine and husband, Nathan, of Charlotte; one stepson, Alec Templeton & wife, Jennifer, of Franklin, NC, one stepdaughter, Ina Plyler & husband, Keith, of Monroe, NC; two grandchildren, Abbie and Everett; six step-grandchildren, Karsyn, Aubrey, Faron, Evie, Hadley and Darby; and one sister, Suzie Kennard of Mt. Carmel, Il. In addition to his parents, Marlin & Patricia Riggs, he was preceded in death by one brother, Jim Riggs. A Military Service will be held at Salisbury National Cemetery, at 501 Statesville Blvd., Salisbury, NC 28144, on Tuesday, June 18 at 10 a.m. A Memorial Service & Gathering will be conducted from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m., Saturday, June 22, 2013, at the Whitehead Manor at 5901 Sardis Rd., in Charlotte, memorial readings will begin at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Audubon North Carolina, at 400 Silver Cedar Court, Suite 240, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.
