Joseph Davant

Joseph Allison Davant CHARLOTTE - Joseph Allison Davant, Jr., of Charlotte died Sunday, November 3rd, 2013, at his home at Southminster Retirement Community. Allison was born in Memphis, TN, on September 8th, 1926, the son of the late Joseph Allison Davant, Sr., and Mary Milburn Davant. The family moved to Charlotte when Allison was two years old, so he considered himself a "native Charlottean." He was proud to be a part of the city as it grew from a small town into the prosperous city that it is today. Allison attended Woodberry Forest School in Virginia, but returned to Charlotte to graduate mid-year from Central High School when faced with the draft in World War II. After serving in the US Navy, Allison entered the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. After one year, he transferred to NC State University where he completed a degree in Textile Engineering. He joined his father in the cotton business and soon expanded into yarn sales, founding Davant Yarn Sales. Allison's leadership helped make that company one of the largest commission yarn sales companies in the US. He then went on to own several successful manufacturing businesses in the textile industry, from yarn manufacturing to knitted fabrics for the medical industry. An avid golfer until health forced him to give up the game, Allison spent many happy hours at his beloved Linville Golf Club, Charlotte Country Club, and anywhere else he had an opportunity to play. He developed an early interest in skiing and was one of the principals in the development of the Blowing Rock Ski Lodge, now Appalachian Ski Mountain. His happiest times were the summers he spent at his wonderful old Linville home with all the family and a host of friends in that special community. Allison was a loyal member of Christ Episcopal Church, his membership going back to Quonset hut days. He enjoyed friendships with rectors from George Henry to Chip Edens, whom he invited to his 80th birthday party just as Chip arrived in Charlotte! In addition to his parents, Allison was preceded in death by his brother, Eugene Milburn Davant. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Anne Summerell Davant, daughters Eva Davant of Burlington, VT, and Susan Davant Brewer of Atlanta, GA, son Joseph Allison Davant III and wife Elizabeth of Charlotte, grandson, Will Brewer of Altanta, GA, and all the Charlotte nieces and nephews whose company brought him many hours of pleasure. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, November 7th, at Christ Episcopal Church, 1412 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC, 28210, with a reception to follow in the Blue Room. Contributions may be made to Christ Episcopal Church (address above); All Saints Mission, P.O. Box 117, Linville, NC; or the Dilworth Center for Chemical Dependency, 2240 Park Road, Charlotte, NC, 28203. T. H. Robertson Funeral & Cremation Service is serving the family, www.throbertson.com.
