Philip Hildreth

Dr. Philip Elwin Hildreth CHARLOTTE - Dr. Philip Elwin Hildreth, 91, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2014, at Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster in Charlotte. He was born on Jan. 14, 1923, son of the late Lewis and Mary Hildreth of Marlboro, N.H. He will affectionately be remembered as a quiet man of integrity who had a lifelong love of education, teaching, and community service. After serving in the United States Navy from 1944-1946, he received a BA in biology from Dartmouth College in 1947, an MA in zoology in 1951, and a Ph.D. in genetics in 1955, both from the University of California at Berkeley. Throughout his professional career, he served as a research biologist in the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory at the University of California at Berkeley from 1951-1956, Associate Professor of Biology at Long Beach State College, Calif., from 1956-1959, research geneticist at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory at the University of California at Berkeley from 1959-1967, and at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte he served in several professional positions including Distinguished Professor and Chairman of the Biology Department, Dean of the College of Natural Science & Mathematics, and Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs from 1967-1990. Society memberships and volunteer work included Genetics Society of America, American Society of Zool-ogists, Association of Southeastern Biologists, American Institute of Biological Sciences, Sigma Xi, Rotary Club International, and the Board of Trustees at the Hezekiah Alexander Homesite from 1990-2001. He is survived by his loving wife, Gretchen Swanson, whom he married on April 19, 1952; daughter Pam Price and husband Mark Price, son Brad Hildreth, son Todd Hildreth and wife Marion; grandchildren Jennifer, Matthew, Meredith, Melissa, Philip, Thomas, Brooke, Malaina and husband Kevin; and by a great-grandson, Caleb. A private service was held on Saturday, April 26, 2014, at Forest Lawn East Cemetery in Weddington.
