Shirley Smith

Shirley Jean Gibson Smith CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Smith, age 76, passed away on Saturday, May 3, 2014, at home surrounded by family. She was born in Huntersville on Sept. 17, 1937, to the late Bigham Leroy Gibson and Mary Woods Gibson. A 1955 graduate of North Mecklenburg High School, she worked for 20th Century Fox until her marriage when she focused on raising her family, community service, and her church work. She married Roy Marvin Smith at Hopewell Baptist Church in Davidson on Sept. 21, 1963. Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, caregiver, and served with many at Pineville United Methodist Church. She loved to laugh, growing flowers, collecting, watching HGTV, square dancing, and travelling. She would be the first person to lend a helping hand when needed and never gave up without giving it her all. Besides her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Roy on April 26, 2014, as well as a brother, Jessie Lee Gibson, infant sister, and brother-in-law, W.T. "Bill" Gurley. She is survived by her daughters Sherri and Melanie Smith of Charlotte; her aunt, Mamie Dellinger; sister, Dorothy Gurley; brother, Thomas Gibson; sister-in-law, Alice Gibson, all of Huntersville/Davidson; and sister and brother-in-law, Sarah Cathryn and Jack Haskins of Chickamauga, Ga. She is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and -nephews, and great-great-nieces and -nephews. Her family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 14, 2014, from 5-7:30 p.m. at the McEwen-Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road. Her funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 15, 2014, at Pineville United Methodist Church, 110 South Polk St. The Rev. Elaine Treece will officiate. Interment will be in Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC. The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Mack White, Dr. Gary Frenette, and all the other doctors and nurses on "Team Shirley" as well as everyone with Home Instead and Hospice and Palliative Care, Charlotte Region for their wonderful care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Pineville United Methodist Church, 110 South Polk Street, Pineville, NC 28134.
