Sylvia Palis

Sylvia Krasner Palis CHARLOTTE - Sylvia Krasner Palis passed away August 10, 2014. She was born on January 12, 1917 in New York City. The oldest of three girls, she was a good student and excelled on the handball courts in Manhattan. Graduating high school at 16, she worked as a secretary and bookkeeper and managed the household while husband Jack worked in employment service, completed his undergraduate degree, and was a Seabee in World War II. In the early 1950s, Sylvia and Jack moved to Middletown, NY where they began raising their two children, Linda and Gary. Sylvia managed two successive moves supporting Jack's advancement, first to Binghamton - and then to Syracuse. Her job as secretary to a dean at Syracuse University allowed her to send Linda and Gary to the university tuition free. Later Jack received his MBA there as well. A job transfer for Jack brought Sylvia to suburban Baltimore for some years, and then to Charlotte. Being in Charlotte meant that Sylvia was able to see her grandchildren Jeff, Amy and Michelle more often. In Charlotte, Sylvia enjoyed meeting new friends, creating quilts from scratch, and fashioning counted cross-stitched wall art. She and Jack participated in ElderHostel trips and were active with Senior Scholars. They continued their avid love of golf well until their eighties while Sylvia remained active in her bowling league. The Carriage Club then became home for Sylvia and Jack, where they made new friends - and remained active on the Carriage Club campus for more than a few years. The family wishes to thank our Charlotte friends [with fondness for Pat Bryant and ZuZu], our relatives, and the many wonderful staff members at the Carriage Club for their compassionate and caring care, especially Mary and Joyce, her loyal and loving companions for several years. Graveside services were held at the Hebrew Cemetery on Monday, Aug. 11. If desired, memorials to either Temple Israel or a are appreciated.
