Thomas Puckett

Thomas Clifton Puckett CHARLOTTE - Thomas Clifton Puckett, age 91, of Charlotte, passed away on April 25, 2013, at his residence. Mr. Puckett was born January 18, 1922 to the late Virginia Reams Puckett and William Stewart Puckett. One of six children, he was raised on a farm in the Long Creek Community, where he learned early the rewards of hard work. At the age of 16, Mr. Puckett graduated from Long Creek School in 1938, and attended Geyer Business School. During World War II, Mr. Puckett proudly served in the U.S Army. Stationed in Europe, he was a member of the 14th Infantry Regiment, 71st Infantry Division. When the war ended, he met and married the love of his life, Laddie Peeler. They were happily married for over 50 years until her death in 1998. Together, they shared the joy of raising twin girls. Tom, as known by his work friends, retired from the U.S. Postal System after 33 years and served on the Carolina Postal Credit Union board. He was a faithful member of Idlewild Baptist Church, and a devoted Christian. His kind and gentle spirit was known by all. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 400 at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church. Tom enjoyed the many dear friends he had at Bojangles over morning coffee and fellowship. Clifton, as known by family, lived an unselfish, honest and obedient life and will be greatly missed. He was a very devoted, loving and supportive father and grandfather, and enjoyed his four grand children and three great-grandchildren. He enjoyed planting and harvesting a vegetable garden, always sharing his produce with others. He also always loved trips to the beach and mountains. In addition to his parents, Mr. Puckett was predeceased by a brother, William Franklin Puckett, and two sisters, Doris Davis and Ruby Webb. Surviving are his twin daughters, Deborah Johnson (Rick) of Mint Hill, NC, and Barbara Fara of Myrtle Beach, SC, grandchildren, Holly Jamison (Johnny), Kevin Johnson, Adam Jones (Jenny), and Austin Jones (Chrissy); and great-grandchildren, Carter, Harper and Lucy Jones. Mr. Puckett is also survived by his brother, Edwin R. Puckett of Charlotte, NC, sister, Frances Faust of Greenville, NC; many nieces and nephews; and his sweet companion and friend, "Ginger." The family extends their sincere appreciation to Dr. Kim Tam and staff, Dr. Lokesh Tejwani and staff, and Hospice and Palliative Care, Charlotte Region, especially his hospice caregivers, Emily Dunbar RN, and Terri Flood CNA. The family will receive friends from 7:00 till 9:00 p.m. Monday at McEwen Funeral Service, Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Mint Hill, NC. His funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 30, at Idlewild Baptist Church, Matthews, NC, with his pastor, the Rev. Keith Whitener officiating. Members of the Men's Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pallbearers. Interment, with military honors, will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Idlewild Baptist Church, 12701 Idlewild Road, Matthews, NC 28105, or the Humane Society of Charlotte, 2700 Toomey Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28203. The world is a better place because of Thomas Clifton Puckett, who greatly loved the Lord, Jesus Christ, and was a beautiful example of love to his family and friends.
