'Mike'
Michael 'Mike' Ray Becknell, 58, of Charlotte, passed away February 21, 2012.
Memorial service will be at 11:00AM Thursday (today) at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church. Reverend Talbot Davis and Pastor Ron Dozier will officiate. The family will receive friends at the family residence following the Memorial Service.
Mike was born July 22, 1953 in York, SC and was a charter member of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church where he served as a Greeter and on the Outreach to the Community. He was a graduate of Northwestern High School in Rock Hill, SC, was formerly employed by Retreading Equipment Company 20 years and was presently with Rountree Plantation Garden. He loved the outdoors and his friends and family. Surviving are wife, Mary Mattox Becknell, his wife of 32 years; daughters, Carly and Cara Becknell of Charlotte; son, Chad Becknell of Charlotte; parents, Ray and Jackie Becknell of Rock Hill, SC; sister, Robin Conley (Will) of Rock Hill, SC; brothers, Jeff Becknell (Linda) and Scott Becknell (Donna) all of Rock Hill, SC; nieces and nephews and great-nephew; father-in-law, Tom Mattox of Charlotte; sisters-in-laws, Phyllis (Lee) of Weddington, NC and Trish Baker (Marty) of Charlotte.
In lieu of flowers, make memorials to Good Shepherd UMC Mission Fund, 13110 Moss Rd., Charlotte, NC 28273.

Dear Mary,
We just learned today from Robbie that Mike had died. After, our conversation a few weeks ago, I was aware of all the health problems he had survived, so I amso terribly sorry to learn of his death. Ironically, I was at Rountree the day of his funeral and they told me that they were short handed because of the death of one of their employees. I might have met Mike and didn't know it as I go to Rountree frequently. Mary, I think the world of you and I am sorry that you are suffering such a tragedy.

To the entire Becknell family, my prayers go out to all of you. I only learned of Mike's passing yesterday (Saturday 2/25) when my brother Allen told me he had seen the announcement in the Herald. Just like Anne Leverrette and Stan Hilton, I too, have known Mike since our days at Ebinport. I remember Mike as one of our bus drivers when we would meet up at Ebinport and ride into town to atten Sullivan for three years of Junior High School and then were lucky enough to make a fourth year while our New high school was being built.
Over the years and after graduating from Northwestern, a lot of our classmates went separate ways, but many of us 'out of towners' do make an effort to get back to some of those high school reunions. I always sought Mike out as one of the classmates I wanted to see and reconnect with. I am going to miss Mike when we have the next reunion, but I'll always remember him with many fond memories, classmate, friend, football player, husband, and father.

Many, many memories of growing up with the Bel-Air gang. Just seeing Mike's picture brings back those good times. I can still see the mischief in his eyes. Please remember God's plan is bigger than we will ever understand but we must have trust in what he does. My heart and love go out to the entire Becknell family in this time of loss.

To Mike's family and friends:
I've known him since I was nine years old and a student at Ebinport Elementary School. He loved to tease me and make me blush. Despite the teasing till I was almost in tears I knew he always had my back. He was one of the first to offer his condolences when my husband died in 2010. So to you I see hime riding off into that good night on a top of the line motorcycle in the sky and wondering what is taking us so long to get there.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.

There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
