Nelson Almeyda Obituary

Nelson Eduardo Almeyda CHARLOTTE - Nelson Eduardo Almeyda, 44, succumbed to cancer on Monday, August 10th, 2015, at his home in Charlotte, North Carolina. Mr. Almeyda was born in Manhattan, NY on March 27, 1971 to Octavio and Gladys Almeyda. He subsequently moved to Long Island when he was 5 and later Miami, FL when he was 10. On December 4th, 1999, Nelson wed Mary Spadafora in Palm City, FL. They ultimately settled down in Charlotte on June 2006 to raise their daughter. He was passionate about music and received a bachelor's degree in Music Liberal Arts from Florida State University in August 2000. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1989 to 1991 as a member of Battery C 3rd Battalion Infantry and saw action in Kuwait during Desert Storm. During that time Mr. Almeyda earned a National Defense Service Medal as well as an M-16 Sharpshooter Marksmanship badge. Above all else, Mr. Almeyda was a good man. Amongst his friends and family he was known as a gentle, kind and compassionate soul. He was sensitive, imaginative and creative. He had a penchant for helping out people in need and felt compelled to defend the underdog. He was a consummate gentleman who went out of his way to ensure the comfort of those around him. To know him was indeed to love him and he will be sorely missed. He is survived by his wife Mary Spadafora and daughter Gabrielle Almeyda; parents Octavio and Gladys Almeyda; brother Omar Almeyda; sister Brenda Almeyda and her husband Keith Roof; parents-in-law Dino and Patricia Spadafora; brothers-in-law Christopher Spadafora, David Spadafora and Robert Spadafora; and a legion of adoring friends and extended family. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 4:00pm on August 14th, 2015, at Heritage Funeral Home, 3700 Forest Lawn Drive, Mathews, NC 28104. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A special thanks to the doctors and nurses at Duke Hospital and especially the nurses and staff of Hospice & Palliative Care for their attentiveness, kindness and dignity.
