Edith Smith Obituary

Edith Sumner Smith
Edith Smith of Charlotte was received into heaven on Thursday, November 18, 2010. She was born on June 13, 1926 to the late Ruth Duvall Sumner and Grady Raymond Sumner. Edith was predeceased by her husband George Robert Smith, Sr. and her brother Grady Raymond Sumner Jr.
She was loved by her three children, Barbara Smith Wingate of Charlotte, George Robert Smith of Simpsonville, SC, and Nancy Smith Couick of Charlotte. She was also much loved by her cherished son-in-law, Marion Robert Couick. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Travis Robert Couick of Hiram, GA, Jacqueline Danielle Couick of Alexandria, VA, Jennifer Smith Traynham of Valdosta, GA, Ashley Marie Smith of Asheville, NC, and Lydia Nicole Wingate of Charlotte, NC; as well as two great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Marie Couick and Taylor Shea Couick. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Carolyn Sumner Rector and family of Arden, NC and her brother, James Kenneth Sumner and family of Myrtle Beach, SC.
Edith was a graduate of Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, NC and was the medical secretary for Dr. McChord Williams in Charlotte for many years. As a former member of the 'Nine-Holers' at Carmel Country Club, she loved golf even more than her garden.
Family will receive friends from 4:00-6:00 pm Sunday, November 21, 2010 at Harry & Bryant Company, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC. A graveside service will be held the following Saturday at Bat Cave Baptist Church in Bat Cave, NC near her childhood home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the American Heart Association.
