Betty Jo Ring Hamrick
Mrs. Hamrick, 79, of Charlotte, passed away at Presbyterian Hospital on March 25, 2009. She was born on March 11, 1930 in High Point, the daughter of Esca Thomas and Ada Ward Ring. She attended the public schools of High Point and graduated from High Point High School in 1948. She then attended Wake Forest College and graduated in 1952. She taught high school english at Lexington High School for three years. In 1954, she represented North Carolina at the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City.
She married S. Dean Hamrick on July 30, 1955. She is survived by three children, Spence and his wife Ellen of Charlotte, Cameron and his wife Monica of Washington, DC, and Sara Hamrick Meek and her husband Peter of Charlotte; four grandchildren, Spencer Hamrick, Abigail Hamrick, Gray Meek and Kate Meek, all of Charlotte; step grandchild, Jake Scott of Washington, DC; brother, Bill Ring and his wife Kitty of High Point; and fourteen nieces and nephews.
Betty Jo was a true extrovert. In high school, she was Sophomore Class President, Editor of both the school newspaper and the Annual, a member of the Honor Society, and she received a Senior Superlative Award.
At Wake Forest, she was the Associate Editor of the Annual, President of the College Little Theater, acted in many Little Theater plays, a member of 'Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities,' and presided at the required weekly college Convocations.

Dear my Hamrick family members,

I just wanted to say that Betty Jo was an amazing woman. Throughout my life I've always looked up to her. She is a wonderful great aunt and always knew just how to make each family gathering fabulous. I always looked forward to seeing her and I know now that she is in heaven and we all look forward to seeing her again. She always had a smile on her face and open arms. She will be missed.

Love,
Alice Hamrick Porter

I had the pleasure of knowing Betty Jo at Myers Park Country Club. They were members here for several years. We planned Sara's Wedding Reception here at Myers Park Country Club together. She made the beautiful White Table Linens for the reception just like the wonderful gowns and robes and slips she made from the fine white cotton fabric.
I purchased the most beautiful one she made for my daughter's wedding gift. She still has it.
I send my love and prayers to all of you.
Betty Jo was one of my favorite "Mother of the Bride" mother's that I ever worked with. She was so happy through the whole thing.
I care.
Fondly,
Bobbie Eller

Spence - I have many wonderful memories of your mom but will always remember her with a smile on her face. I can't remember once in all the times I came home with you after school that she wasn't there cheerfully to greet us - and feed us. I also remember searching for her Miss North Carolina picture on the wall at Tony's Seafood in Morehead City when we went there while at Camp Seagull. She was a great lady and I know that she will be greatly missed. All our prayers and best wishes go out to you, Cameron and Sara.

Sara- So sorry to hear of your mother's death. I will always remember her as bubbly and most hospitable. And I always love seeing her signed Miss North Carolina photograph at the Sanitary Fish Market in Morehead City :) You have been blessed to have such a great mom! I know you will miss her terribly but what a wonderful life she has now. Much love to you and your family,

To the Hamrick Family,
Please accept my deepest sympathy on the passing of Mrs. Hamrick. I enjoyed our conversations when she called to speak with Cameron. A call never ended without us laughing and to finally meet her at Cameron and Monica's wedding was like I already knew her. I know she will be missed by all. May the Lord continue to comfort and keep you.

Dear Hamrick Family,

Please accept my deepest sympathy in learning of your mom's death. My dad, "Scoop" McCrary of the "Dispatch" in Lexington worked closely with your mom during her year as "Miss North Carolina". I was privileged to meet your mom early in the 1970's when she came to a "Miss Lexington" pageant. She had such a vibrant and uplifting personality and all who met her were embraced with her charm.

I do agree with your family member who says..."They are laughing up there now."

Cameron and Monica:
We were so sorry to hear about your mom. I know she was a real bright light in the lives of your family. I'm still remembering some of her quips at your wedding.

The Madsen family sends our deepest condolences -- you are in our thoughts and our prayers. The little boys want you to know that you are in their prayers too.
