David Wells Morgan GREENVILLE - David Wells Morgan, 53, of Greenville, SC, died Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. David was Professor of Modern Language at Furman University where he taught French and Humanities for 20 years. Students and colleagues valued him for his erudition and especially for his kindness. He was cherished by his family, by the faculty and students of Furman University and by many friends and colleagues throughout the world. He earned a Juris Doctor degree from Vanderbilt University and a Ph.D. from Princeton University. A gifted linguist, David Morgan was internationally known not only for his work in French, but also for his expertise in Latin. He was a beloved member of the spoken Latin community and the author of an important groundbreaking dictionary informally known as the Morgan Lexicon. He is survived by his parents, Thomas William and Dorothy Wells Morgan of Charlotte; brother Dan Morgan of Knoxville, TN; aunts Sarah Nichols of Young-Harris, GA, Lucille Lawson of Spartanburg, SC, and Louise Smith of Inman, SC. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at Mulberry Baptist Church (6450 Tuckaseegee Rd, Charlotte) with Reverend Larry Burns officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at Forest Lawn West Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Furman University Chaplain's Fund, 3300 Poinsett Hwy., Greenville, SC 29613 or to the charity of the doner's choice.
