Dr. Dorothy Hughes Henneman PINEVILLE - Dr. Dorothy Hughes Henneman, 89, of Pineville, NC, died of heart failure on Monday, September 2, 2013 - one day before her 90th birthday. She was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1923, to American parents, Reynold and Edna Hughes. She attended Wellesley College, and then Johns Hopkins Medical School, graduating in 1949 as one of its first female doctors. She also earned advanced graduate degrees from Radcliffe College and Harvard Medical School. A gifted scientist, she performed research in endocrinology and anesthesiology. She worked for several East Coast hospitals and pharmaceutical companies. She also held various Professorships at Harvard University, the University of Delaware, and Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, where she honed her expertise in medical bio-ethics and served as an arbitrator in medical malpractice suits. Dorothy - who was an avid world traveler and gardener - is survived by her four children, Carolyn Henneman of Baltimore, MD, Sally Linder of Burlington, VT, Philip Henneman of Sunapee, NH and Diane Smith of Charlotte, NC, her sister Margaret Foskett of Chatham, ME and Sanibel, FL, eight grandchildren and her miniature schnauzer, Cody. She was divorced from her first husband, Philip H. Henneman, MD in 1963, and survived her last husband, David Conklin. She will be lovingly remembered by her family and all who knew her as an inspirational teacher and friend. Consistent with her wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial services, but memorial donations would be welcome to Charlotte Hospice and Palliative Care,
