Edward Clyde Johnston Sr. "Ed" CHARLOTTE - Edward Clyde "Ed" Johnston Sr., 85 , of 11325 Pump Station Road, departed for his heavenly home on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at Huntersville Oaks Nursing Home. He was born August 9, 1927 in Wilson, North Carolina to the late Jessie Clyde and Pauline Massey Johnston. He was a graduate of Mount Holly High School and Belmont Abbey College. He also attended Davidson College. He was a co owner of Bellhaven Auto Sales. His love of NASCAR dated back to the early days of the sport. He was a very skilled pilot who loved to fly. He was a US Army Veteran who served during WWII. He was a member of the Long Creek Masonic Lodge, the Quite Birdmen, and Durham Memorial Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years Naomi H. Johnston. He leaves behind a son Edward "Chip" Johnston Jr. and his wife Linda of Mount Holly. A brother William "Bill" Johnston and longtime family friend Charles R. West of Hillsborough. A grandson Tyler Marius Edward Johnston of Mount Holly. He was a loving father, father in law, brother, grandfather, uncle and a friend who never met a stranger. A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Johnston will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, December 15, 2012 at Durham Memorial Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery in Mount Holly. The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00pm Friday at Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mount Holly. Memorials may be made to Samaritans Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607-3000 or to Victory Junction Gang Camp, 4500 Adam's Way, Randleman, NC 27317. Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mount Holly is serving the family.
