Gordon Collier MATTHEWS - Gordon Collier, 92, of Matthews, NC passed away on June 15, 2014, at Plantation Estates. He was born August 20, 1921 in Lorain, Ohio. Gordon graduated from Elyria High School before attending Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania and Columbia University in New York, where he majored in Management. At the outset of WWII, Gordon enlisted in the Army Air Corps, where he served four years as a flight instructor. Following his discharge he married Hilda Scharein and began his career as a salesman with Columbia Gas of Ohio in Lorain. He served in many positions around Ohio, and one in West Virginia, before retiring in 1984 as Vice President of Columbia's seven operating companies: OH, WV, PA, NY, MD, KY and VA. After retiring in 1984, Gordon and Hilda moved to Seven Lakes, NC, where they were involved in many civic activities. Gordon continued with his favorite activity - golf. In 1992, Gordon and Hilda moved to Plantation Estates in Matthews, NC. Mrs. Collier began suffering from Alzheimer's disease and passed away in 2000. In 2001, Gordon married Anni Keller, who predeceased him in September 2013. Gordon is survived by his son, Andy, with his wife, Caryn, of Nashville; his son, Dennis Collier, of Eugene, OR, and daughter, Barbara Lane, with her husband, Bud, of Lexington, SC; grandchildren, Reno Collier, Sarah Lane, Erich Lane; and great-grandchildren, Gatlin Collier, Emily Collier and Caleb Lane. Gordon was a member of the Oasis Temple, served as President of the Kiwanis Club in Charleston, WV, the Rotary Club in Fremont, OH, and served in various positions with the American Gas Association. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to A Soldier's Child, http://asoldierschild.org/. The organization aims to honor the memory of the soldier parent by giving a meaningful gift to his/her children on their birthday.
