Howard C. Westphal July 5, 1920 - June 28, 2013 MATTHEWS - Howard C. Westphal, 92, of Matthews died peacefully on June 28, 2013 at Plantation Estates retirement community. He was born July 5, 1920 in Clinton, IA. After graduating from the University of Iowa, he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean. After the war, he earned a law degree from the University of Michigan and entered a long career in the life insurance business in Chicago, IL. Following his retirement, Howard and his wife Melba moved to the River Hills community in Lake Wylie, SC, and then to Plantation Estates in Matthews. Howard was active in both communities. Howard lived a life of extraordinary integrity, determination, and dedication to his family. His true joys were his beloved wife Melba, with whom he spent 35 wonderful and loving years; his visits with family; his long walks and bicycle rides; and reading history, biography and current events. He was known for his quick wit, which lightened the hearts of all who knew him, even through his last days. His memory will be cherished by his loving wife Melba; his four children from a first marriage, Patricia Westphal of Raleigh, Mary Wells of Boulder, CO, Ken Wetphal of Bielefeld, Germany and Lynne Westphal of Evanston, IL; Melba's daughter Sally Carnahan of McLean, IL; his extended family of Randall and Jayma Hanauer of Waxhaw, and Gloria and David Muehlbauer of Gilbert, AZ; his grandchildren and his treasured friends in Matthews. A memorial service will be held at Plantation Estates on Sunday, July 14 at 1:30PM.
