James Britt Atkins CHARLOTTE - Mr. Atkins, 95, of Charlotte, NC passed away Monday, December 17, 2012, at the Harris Hospice Unit of Presbyterian Hospital. He was born September 30, 1917 in Brunswick County, North Carolina, to the late Lawrence Atkins and Ruby McKeithan Atkins. Mr. Atkins served his country with honor with the United States Army during World War II. He continued to serve his fellowman as a fireman retiring from the Charlotte Fire Department. He also served as a Deputy Sheriff in the Mecklenburg Co. Sheriff's Department from which he also retired. Mr. Atkins is survived by his wife, Penny Atkins; his children: Ruby Atkins and Hazel Atkins; step sons: John Robinson and Andy Robinson his special caregiver for the past four years and sister-in-law, Gerry Drye. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Ina Horne Atkins; brothers: Naaman, Herman and George Atkins; and his brother-in-law, Richard Drye. The Atkins family will gather to greet friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Thursday, December 20, 2012 at McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28212. A service to celebrate his life will be held 1:00 PM, Friday, December 21, 2012 at McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Chapel with The Reverend Dennis Bean, Mt. Holly Church of God, officiating. Burial will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. Memorials may be made in remembrance of James B.
