James Ethington MATTHEWS - James (Jim) Ethington, 87, of Matthews passed away on Sunday December 1, 2013, at The Haven in the Village at Carolina Place. Graveside services with full military honors will be held at 1:30 PM Friday, December 6, 2013 at Sunset Memory Gardens in Mint Hill with Reverend Frank Lybrand officiating. Mr. Ethington was born April 3, 1926 in Montgomery, Al., to the late William V. and Nora M. Ethington. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Joyce D. Ethington, one brother and five sisters. He proudly served his country in the US Marine Corps during World War II and in the US Army Airborne after the war. Mr. Ethington attended Belmont Abbey College in the Business Administration program. Jim was employed by IBM where he retired after 32 years. He enjoyed ballroom dancing as a member of Idlewild Country Club, tennis, and participated in the Senior Olympics for several years. Jim also enjoyed painting for a number of years. He was a wonderful and loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be greatly missed. His survivors include three sons: Jeff and his wife Brenda, David and his wife Teresa, Ken, and one granddaughter, Shannon. The family requests memorials in his memory be sent to Idlewild Baptist Church, 12701 Idlewild Road, Matthews, NC 28105, where he was a member. Arrangements for the Ethington family are in the care of Heritage Funeral Home, Indian Trail Chapel.
