Jane Johnson Obituary

Jane Anne Hess Johnson CHARLOTTE - Jane Anne Hess Johnson, 95, of Charlotte, NC, died Wednesday, November 11, 2015, at CMC-Pineville. A native of Greensboro, NC, she was born September 9, 1920, daughter of the late Walter Kelley Hess and Lillian Daniels Hess. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Horace Woodrow Johnson and two sons, Neil Stuart Johnson and Gregory Hess Johnson. Mrs. Johnson was a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Greensboro College and completed post-graduate studies at UNC-Greensboro. She worked for many years as an elementary school teacher in the Greensboro City Schools. Mrs. Johnson was a member for over 60 years of West Market Street United Methodist Church where she served as the Director of Christian Education for Children as well as directed the children's and youth choirs. An accomplished soloist, she performed regularly at her church and at Temple Emmanuel. In her youth, she won second place in a Metropolitan Opera contest. Mrs. Johnson was active in musical circles having been a member of the Euterpe Music Club and performed solos numerous times in Handel's Messiah and other musical performances. During WWII, she sang and entertained the troops at the local Army base and performed on a weekly radio show in Greensboro. Mrs. Johnson was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma in Greensboro and Charlotte, a member of the Pedagogue Garden Club, The Pilot Club International, and Greensboro Lioness Club. She served as the Coordinator of Volunteer Services for Life Line and on the Board of the Auxiliary at Cone Hospital. Mrs. Johnson was also on the Board of the Mecklenburg Medical Auxiliary's Hospitality House formerly located at St. John's Baptist Church in Charlotte. Upon moving to Charlotte, Mrs. Johnson became an active member of St. John's Baptist Church where she taught the Hanna Sunday School Class and served on the Altar and the Arts Committees. At Brookdale Carriage Club Providence, she was active on the Food Committee and the Residents' Council. She received membership in the International Society of Poets following the publication of one of her poems by Noble Publishing Company of Great Britain. She later became an associate member of the Providence Community Church which meets at the Brookdale Carriage Club Providence and became the church's accompanist for more than a decade. Mrs. Johnson is survived by her son, Dale Woodrow Johnson and his wife, Carol Fox Johnson of Charlotte, NC and two grandchildren, Brian Woodrow Johnson of Charlotte, NC and Kristen Elizabeth Johnson of Concord, NC. A memorial service will be at 2:00 PM on Saturday, November 21, 2015, in the Auditorium of the Clubhouse at Brookdale Carriage Club Providence, 5800 Old Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28226. The family will receive friends following the service in the card room. Memorials may be sent to Habitat for Humanity, PO Box 220287, Charlotte, NC 28222. Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Dale,I'm so sorry about your mom. I was so young when Grandma married your granddad that I never really new the difference. He was my grandpa, and all of you were my family. I loved your mom and admired her singing talents so much!I think of you all often and am so sorry for your loss. I will keep all of you in my prayers.
