Jefferson Eugene Grigsby, Jr. PHOENIX, AZ - Jefferson Eugene Grigsby, Jr., noted artist and art educator, formerly of Charlotte, died on Sunday, June 9, 2013, at the age of 94, in Phoenix, Arizona. Grigsby had lived in Phoenix for more than 60 years. The son of educators, Jefferson Eugene Grigsby, Sr., and Purry Dixon Grigsby, "Gene," was born in Greensboro on October 17, 1918. A graduate of Second Ward High School where his father was principal, Grigsby attended Johnson C. Smith University for one year before transferring to Morehouse College in Atlanta, to study Art Education. He received his BA degree from Morehouse College, his master's from Ohio State University and his Ph.D. in Art History from New York University. In Phoenix, he was chair of the Art Departments at Carver and Phoenix Union High Schools. He was a professor in the School of Art at Arizona State University for 22 years. A tireless advocate for the Arts, he was the recipient of many prestigious honors and awards. His works are in public and private collections worldwide. He is survived by two sons, J. Eugene lll (Sharon), of Los Angeles, CA, and Marshall (Harriet), of Silver Spring, MD, along with a sister, Miriam Grigsby Bates and a brother, Marvin O. Grigsby, both of Charlotte. Grigsby is predeceased by his wife, R. Thomasena Grigsby, a brother, Donald D. Grigsby and his parents. Dr. Grigsby or "Papa Gene" as family affectionately called him, also leaves four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.
