John U. Cushman, Jr. CHARLOTTE - John Ulmer Cushman Jr., 89, passed away peacefully at Harris Hospice Unit of Presbyterian Hospital after a brief illness on Monday, January 5, 2014. John, the son of John Ulmer and Drina Hedgpeth Cushman, was born in Greenville, SC. He grew up in Palm Beach, FL. John served in WWII with the 103rd Infantry Division from 1942 to 1945. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia with a BS in Business, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and a member of the university golf team. John moved to Charlotte in 1949, where he began work for Triangle Conduit and Cable Co. He later formed The John Cushman Agency. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. John was predeceased in death by his first wife, Rita Nisbet Cushman in 1990. He was then married to Ella "Boo" Cushman for 23 years. Boo passed away October 29, 2013. John is survived by his daughters, Paula Nisbet Cushman and Brooks Lucas Cushman, both of Middlebrook, VA; a granddaughter, Cushman Brinegar, her husband Will, and a great-granddaughter, Hadden Brinegar all of Houston, TX. He is also survived by his sister, Drina C. Parkey of St. Augustine, FL; his brother, Paul G. Cushman of Wilmington, NC; his sister-in-law, Tom Nisbet Greer of Dalton, GA; and his devoted friend and caregiver, Harrietta Wiggins, of Charlotte, who is a true member of our family. John is survived by Boo's children, Bill West of Stone Mountain, GA, Dick West of Bowen Island, Canada, Mike West of Plano, TX, Jackie West Barnes of New Bern, NC, Jo Gibbons of Leesburg, VA, and Judy Farrell of Charlotte, NC; thirteen grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Johnny was a member of Myers Park and Biltmore Forest County Clubs. He was born to a golfing family, and remained an avid golfer. His love for golf, sailing and the ocean never wavered. A graveside service will be held in the Garden at Christ Episcopal Church on Friday, January 10th at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Novant Health Hospice and Palliative Care, PO Box 33549, Charlotte, NC 28233-3549.
