Johnnie Lee Gurley CHARLOTTE - Johnnie Lee Gurley, of Charlotte, passed away on Jan. 25, 2014, at the age of 71. He was born in Stedman on Feb. 1, 1942. He was the first of seven children born to his loving parents. Mr. Gurley was a Veteran of the United States Army. He enjoyed a long career as a chef and a baker, and was well known for his delicious brownies. He also loved to be outdoors, whether it was planting a vegetable garden, or landscaping with a wide variety of plants and beautiful flowers. Mr. Gurley was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Christine Gurley, of Charlotte, and his much adored sister, Ava Jean Gotts, with whom he shared a very close bond. He was also predeceased by two nephews, Robert Lee West and Wade Mullis, III, and his beautiful niece, Jean Marie Mullis. Mr. Gurley is survived by three sons, Lee Edward Gurley, of Texas, and Thomas Calvin and Robert William Gurley, both of Alabama. He is also survived by his brother Jake Gurley and wife, Bess, of Charlotte, and his sisters, Judy West, of Statesville, Juanita Gurley, of Charlotte, Joan Mullis and husband, Wade, of Mint Hill, and Janice Charles and husband, David, of Independence, Va. He had many nieces and nephews who were very dear to him: Morgan, Luke and Ellen Gurley; Jennifer Broome and her son Daniel; Christi and Michael Sims, of Charlotte; Lisa McKnight and her sons Matt and Mike, of Columbia, S.C.; Jason West and wife, Andrea, and their two daughters, Piper and Keely, of Statesville; and his very special aunt, JoAnn Jenette, whom he loved to bake pies for and to spend the day fishing at her home. A grave side service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 29, at noon at Forest Lawn East Cemetery, 3700 Forest Lawn Dr., Matthews, NC 28104. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to Presbyterian Hospice & Palliative Care at 324 N. McDowell St., Charlotte, NC 28204.
