Joseph Baird Bergwall CHARLOTTE - Joe Bergwall, 90, passed away on Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at the Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Charlotte, North Carolina. He is predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Mary Eleanor (Sandy) and survived by his three children: Barry, Anne, and Eric; their spouses: Jean, Phil, and Donna; and his five grandchildren: Andrew, Allison, Emily, Matthew, and Christopher. Joe was a devoted husband and dedicated family man. He was a treasurer, Deacon and active lifelong member of the Episcopal Church. He volunteered in his community as an officer for Rotary Club. Joe was an avid sailor, cross country skier, gardener, and club champion golfer. He also loved music and sang tenor in his church choirs, as well as in barbershop quartets. He played baseball during his college days at Brown University and was drafted by the Cleveland Indians organization to play third base, but chose instead to enlist in the Navy during World War II. After the war he returned to Brown to complete his BA in History. Joe spent most of his business career in various executive positions. After 30 years with NCR Corporation he went on to own and manage Rogers and Seymour, an executive search firm in Portland, Maine. While living in Maine Joe and Sandy became inveterate travelers, often to southern climes. They finally settled into the low country of South Carolina on Dataw Island. They moved to Charlotte, NC in 2010, residing at Merrywood on Park Road. Joe moved to the Laurels in Pineville after Sandy's passing. Joe was known for his quick smile and twinkling eyes. He always had a kind word and a joke for everyone he met. He brightened every room he entered. Joe was dearly loved by his family, his friends and his caregivers. The Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter provided spiritual guidance and support for him, especially during his mourning and passing. Services will be held on Wednesday, July 24 at 2:00 pm at The Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter at 2701 Park Road, Charlotte. A separate graveside service will be held at a later date at St. Helena's Episcopal Church in Beaufort, SC.
