Max Murray Turner CHARLOTTE - Max Murray Turner, of Charlotte, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, May 2, 2014, at the age of 90. Max was born Aug. 22, 1923, in Chattanooga, Tenn., the only child of Herbert Roland Turner and Essie Pearl Murray. Max graduated from Chattanooga Central High School in 1940 and attended the University of Tennessee until July 1942 when he enlisted in the US Marine Corps. During World War II he served as a drill instructor at Parris Island, an instructor at Sea School, and was briefly stationed in Panama. He was attending Officer Candidates School in Quantico, Va. when the war ended. Choosing to remain in the area, Max enrolled at Georgetown University in 1945 on the G.I. Bill and graduated from the School of Foreign Service in 1948. While in Washington, DC, he met Willie Lucille Wells, of Shelby. They were married in the spring of 1948 and remained so until her passing in 2002. He enjoyed a long and prosperous business career, retiring from the print shop he owned in Raleigh in 1998. He subsequently moved to Charlotte to be near his grandchildren. Max is survived by three daughters: Lora Jane Schneider of Rocky Hill, Conn.; Rachel Turner of Branchburg, N.J.; Elizabeth Russell of Easthampton, Mass.; and three sons: Murray W. Turner, M.D of Charlotte; Mark W. Turner of Atlanta, Ga.; and Stuart R. Turner of Raleigh. Max is also survived by nine loving grandchildren.
