R. Michael Hunter "Mike" CHARLOTTE - R. Michael Hunter "Mike" a Charlotte native, age 67, passed away on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, from a heartattack. Mike graduated from Garinger High School in '64. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army as an electrician while stationed in Germany during the Vietnam war. A casual Celebration of Life gathering will be held onSunday, July 20th 10am-12pm at Colonel Francis Beatty Park, 4330 Wedd-ington Rd., Matthews, NC 28105. Mike never met a stranger and was always quick with a joke. He loved the outdoors, especially fishing, gardening, yardwork with his wife, and insect and bird watching. In fact, Mike was well liked by his timid neighbors because of his snake wrangling abilities. Both neighborhood kids and dogs knew to come to Mr. Mike for treats. He rescued an injured owl from a ditch last year and kept close tabs on her rehab at the Carolina Raptor center until her release several months later in his back yard. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 20 years, Debbie; his children Rob, Erin and husband Adam, and Mat; step-children, Chris, Jason and wife, Emily, and Emily and husband, Max; siblings, Margaret, Mary, Lynn, Lynda, and David and their families; Pop was very much loved by his eight grandchildren, Tanner, Layton, Coleton, Olivia, Owen, Asher, Seth, and soon to be born Parker. It's always a fun time at Pop's house where you could count on lots of teasing and lessons on the outdoors and on his many surgical scars which the kids found fascinating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent to Carolina Raptor Center, PO Box 16443, Charlotte, NC 28297. Online condolences may be placed at www.csofcharlotte.com.
