Robert G. Burns CLEVELAND - Robert G. Burns, age 92, passed away on March 28, 2014. He was born in St. Mary's, Pa. to Irwin H. Burns and Dorothy Pass Burns on Sept. 28, 1921. He had one brother, the late Irwin W. Burns of Gastonia. Mr. Burns graduated from Central High School in Charlotte and attended Wyomissing Polytech in Reading, Pa. and Wake Forest University. At the beginning of WWII he enlisted in the US Infantry and was stationed in Iceland as a radio operator. One year later he was reassigned to Ft. Monmouth, N.J. where he graduated as a Second Lieutenant in the Signal Corps. He was then assigned to the China, Burma, India Theater where he was awarded the Bronze Star. He served a total of 14 years in the service, including the National Guard and attained the rank of Captain. Mr. Burns was a Eucharistic Layperson of the Episcopal Church. Mr. Burns and his wife of 68 years, Rachael Rhyne Burns, had four daughters Sandra Burns of Charlotte, Sally Shrader (Shannon) of Mooresville, Robin Rhyne of Greensboro, and Tracy Cornacchione (Tony) of Salisbury. There are seven grandchildren: Robbie Johnson (Tammy), Sandra Stirewalt (Richard), Kaitlyn Moore and Rachael, Nicholas (Selena), Joseph, and Samuel Cornacchione. There are three great-grandchildren Shyann Smith, Cheyenne and Chase Stirewalt. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Rowan Hospice and Palliative Care in Salisbury, 720 Grove St., Salisbury, NC 28144. Lyerly Funeral Home is serving the Burns family.
