Robert Otis Henderson HUNTERSVILLE - Robert Otis Henderson, 88, of Huntersville died November 29, 2013 at his home. He was born on March 9, 1925 in Mecklenburg County to the late William Otho and Carrie Esther Nantz Henderson. He attended Huntersville High School where he was captain of the men's basketball team in 1942. He was a longtime devoted member of Hopewell Presbyterian Church where he was active in the Wayland Sunday School Class. He also spent many years serving as a faithful Elder and Deacon of the Church. Robert also enjoyed spending time at outings with Trinity United Methodist Church as well as traveling to visit with family, friends and his "army buddies." Mr. Henderson was a proud WWII veteran serving in the Army from June, 1943 to April, 1946 with the 568thAAA Battalion in England, France, Holland and Germany. He was also a volunteer fireman with the Long Creek Fire Station for many years. Mr. Henderson was employed for 25 years with Wilson Sausage Company. After retirement he was self-employed with Henderson Meat Distributors, Inc. He enjoyed building beautiful black walnut furniture for his home and church in his woodworking shop for many years as well. He and his wife had a booth at the Mecklenburg County Farmers Market for many years selling produce and flowers from their garden as well as homemade, breads, cakes, pies and soups. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Laura (Polly) Wilson Henderson; sons, Robert Michael Henderson and wife Penni of Fayetteville and William Hugh Henderson and wife Cathy of Iron Station; daughter Lisa Hilton and husband Alan of Concord; grandchildren, Chris Henderson and wife Becky, Josh Henderson and wife Laquet, Daniel Henderson and wife Dejah, James Henderson and wife Tina, Jeremy Henderson, Aubrey Kennedy and husband Walt, Laura Seagle and husband Jake, Katie Henderson, Jason Hilton and wife Philomena, and Justin Hilton; as well as great-grandchildren, Abigail, Rachele, Johanna, Elizabeth, Catherine, Anna, Emily, Isabel, Elizabeth, Bella, Victoria, Sean, Chris, Quinn, Lilly, Ben, Katelyn, Ava, Alexus, Cannon and Trevor. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins, He was preceded in death by his grandson, Matthew Henderson, and by sister, Grace Hager, Kathleen McElroy and Kitty Henderson; brothers John Henderson, Frank Henderson, James Henderson and Morris Henderson. Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to Hopewell Presbyterian Church, 10500 Beatties Ford Rd. Huntersville, NC 28078 or Hospice of Lake Norman, 705 Griffith St., Suite 203, Davidson, NC 28036. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM Wednesday, December 4 at Hopewell Presbyterian Church with Rev. Allan Purtill officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. James Funeral Home of Huntersville is serving the family.
