Thomas Hoover Mangum "Hoover" CHARLOTTE - Mr. Mangum, 86, of Charlotte, NC died Wednesday, November 27, 2013, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC surrounded by his family. Mr. Mangum was born August 28, 1927, in Monroe, NC, a son of the late Benjamin "Lex" Wade Mangum and Florence "Flonnie" Mae Plyler Mangum. Mr. Mangum was a US Navy Veteran of WW II & the Korean War and served aboard the USS Midway and the USS Kearsarge. He was a member of All Saints Lutheran Church and was active with the Boy Scouts of America at St. Luke's Lutheran Church where he served as a Scout leader for many years. Hoover started his career with Jack's Cookie company and retired from Flowers Bakery after 24 years and enjoyed gardening and being outside. Mr. Mangum was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother and grandfather. In addition to his parents Mr. Mangum was preceded in death by eight siblings, Gladys, Maxine, Kate, Nellie, Frank, Leland, Watson and Ed. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Barbara Beatty Mangum; son, Thomas Wade Mangum; daughter, Rebecca Jean Wood and husband, William; son, Robert Earl Mangum; sister, Edith Plyler; grandchildren, Robert Edward Mangum, Katherine Jean Wood and James Hoover Wood; sisters-in-law, Mary Lee Mangum and Rebecca Beatty Lohr and husband, Lawrence and many nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors and friends. A service to celebrate his life will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, November 30, 2013, at All Saints Lutheran Church. The family will greet friends following the service at the church. Memorials may be made to All Saints Lutheran Church, 17030 Lancaster Hwy., Charlotte, NC 28277 or the .
