Young H. Allen, Jr. KINSTON - Young H. Allen, Jr. passed away peacefully on July 16, 2014, following a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. A private burial was held on Monday; a celebration of his life will be held at a later date. He was born to Young and Martha (Mattie) Allen on January 1, 1925 in Peachland, North Carolina. He married Helen Palmer Boyette of Carthage in August 1950, and they welcomed three daughters (Pamela, Katherine and Melissa). His career in public education - his lifelong passion - spanned decades. He was among the longest tenured school superintendents in North Carolina, during which time he and his close colleagues oversaw the challenging and largely peaceful desegregation of the then tri-racial (white, black, Native American) Robeson County Schools. He later enjoyed serving as superintendent of Lenoir County Schools. His warm, committed friendships and professional relationships with people of all races and backgrounds and his love of children defined him as an educator and a man. He was a beloved father and grandfather, loyal friend and neighbor, avid fisherman, pilot in the Army Air Corps, Rotarian, funny story teller, sought after speaker, Baptist deacon and Sunday School teacher for nearly 60 years. Young's professional and community service were recognized with many appointments and awards over the years, including the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. He attributed these accolades to the efforts of those with whom he had the privilege and pleasure of serving. Young is survived by his wife, his daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and Harding Stowe, Katherine and Lindsay Gray, and Melissa Allen. Also surviving are his five grandchildren whom he adored: Palmer, Harding, and Young Stowe; Garth and Bahnson Gray, and Garth's wife Patricia Jane (PJ). He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Thomas Allen, and sisters, Patricia Talley, Flora Toulme and Sybil Anderson. Memorials may be made to the Lenoir Community College Foundation - on whose Board of Trustees he served for many years - for the Young H. Allen, Jr. Scholarship Fund (LLC Foundation, PO Box 188, Kinston, NC 28502) or to the First Baptist Church, Kinston, NC. Arrangements are with Edwards Funeral Home.
