Carolyn Lee Tatum Austin MATTHEWS - Carolyn Lee Tatum Austin, Matthews, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, at the age of 66. Carolyn passed away peacefully in her home after a seven year long battle with breast cancer. Her devout faith in God, strong will to live, and never ceasing determination is what carried Carolyn through life and her illness. Needless to say, Carolyn left a lasting impression on all of those who were blessed with the opportunity to know and love her. Carolyn was born to the late John Lee Tatum and Velma Isaacs Tatum on April 28, 1947, in Boone, North Carolina. She married the late Bernard Baucom Austin on Jan. 13, 1973, in York County, South Carolina and they lived together in Matthews, North Carolina for the remainder of their lives. Carolyn is survived by her two children, Jeffrey Bernard Austin of Matthews, North Carolina, and Carol Lee Austin of Charlotte, North Carolina, her sister, Barbara Tatum of Boone, North Carolina, her aunt, Juanita Ruth Cornett of Boone, North Carolina and Joann Brookshire of Boone, North Carolina. Carolyn was one of the first women to become a Vice President of First Citizens Bank where she was responsible for establishing a sophisticated fraud detection department while working closely with the Federal Bureau of Investigation until she retired in 2003. Carolyn was a member of First Baptist Church of Indian Trail and an active supporter of Hope Cancer Ministries of Charlotte. She loved gardening and reading the Bible and daily devotionals. Carolyn was a devoted mother to her two children and loved spending time with them on a daily basis. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Hope Cancer Ministries of Charlotte. A visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, at Heritage Funeral Home at Forest Lawn with a service to follow. Carolyn will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn East Cemetery. On-line condolences may be left at The Austin family is in the care of Heritage Funeral Home - Weddington Chapel.
