Charles Wilson Obituary

Reverend
Charles Leonard Wilson
Reverend Wilson, 67, of Charlotte, NC, died on January 29, 2011, after a courageous struggle with cancer. He was born July 19, 1943, in Burlington, NC, the son of Bingham Rose Wilson and the late Margaret Wilson of Burlington, North Carolina. Charles was a graduate of Jacksonville High School in 1961. He graduated from Belhaven University in 1967 and then went on to enter Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi and earned a master's of divinity in 1971.
He pastored churches in both Linden and Aliceville, Alabama in addition to being the first stated clerk of Warrior Presbytery, the first presbytery in the Presbyterian Church of America which was formed in December 1973. In 1974 he moved to Charlotte, NC where he became the founding pastor of Alexander Presbyterian Church. After suffering a heart attack in 1979, he had to medically retire but the small church he planted on Alexander Road continued, changing locations and growing into what is now known as Christ Covenant Church in Matthews, NC. Reverend Wilson also pastored Trinity Presbyterian Church in Van Wyck, SC from 1982 to 1986 before once again having to medically retire due to his health.
Charles loved people and his heart's desire was that others might know Jesus Christ as their Savior. He was a loving and faithful husband, father and grandfather, a wise counselor, a loyal friend, and selfless pastor who sought to faithfully shepherd all those who belong to Christ and to share the gospel with all he enountered. He is survived by his father, Bingham Rose Wilson of Burlington, NC and brothers Thomas Wilson of Lexington, SC; James Wilson of Snow Camp, NC; Neil Wilson of Burlington, NC. He was married 43 years to Ruth Ann Jent Wilson and they had six children: daughters Ruthanna Wilson Marshall and husband Rev. W. Gregory Marshall of Lexington, SC; Rachel Wilson Case and husband Rev. Eugene Case of Woodville, Mississippi; Sarah Wilson Johnson and husband Craig Johnson of Winston Salem; Reba Wilson Ball and husband Timothy Ball of Fort Mill, SC; Martha Wilson Seger and husband Chad Seger of Charlotte, NC; and son, Rev. Charles Daniel Wilson and wife, Raewyn, of Nelson, New Zealand. Charles was the proud grandfather of eighteen children.

To the family of Charles Wilson:
It is with a heavy heart that we write this note of condolence. Charles was truly a man of God whose primary goal was that all that he came in contact with would become a follower of Christ.
Charles was truly a man called to shepherd the flock of Christ. He was very instrumental in the formation of the Presbyterian Church of America.
May God grant each of you the peace that only He can give as you grieve the loss of this servant of God. We are assured that he was met with the words, Well done, good and faithful servant.
In His love,
Charles and Robbie Davis
Aliceville, Alabama

My wife and I were so sad to hear of the passing of Charles Wilson. He was a friend and a kind brother. Though he was only a few years my senior, I regarded him as a true mentor. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
