David Henry Henderson
Mr. Henderson, age 94, of Charlotte, NC, died September 6, 2009. He was born October 31, 1914 in New Bern, NC, son of the late Judge David Ezekiel and Mattie Jenkins Henderson.
The family moved to Charlotte where David grew up on Tryon Street and later on the family farm 'Scaleybark'. He attended Fourth Ward Grammar School, graduated from Central High School and Duke University. He received his J.D. from Duke University in 1937 and practiced law in the family firm for 54 years until he retired. During his legal career he prosecuted in County recorders court and served as president of the Mecklenburg County Bar Association, a post previously held by his father. Mr. Henderson also served as a member of the N.C. House of Representatives. During WWII he served as a Major in the Army Air Corps.
Mr. Henderson was active in the Charlotte Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Red Cross, and was first commander of the American Legion post 262. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and gardening. He served as Book Editor for a national hunting magazine, wrote 5 published outdoor books (some illustrated by his daughter Shep Foley), family histories, poems and stories.
Mr. Henderson is survived by his wife, Maxine P. Henderson; son, David L. Henderson; daughters, Anne Henderson and Shep Henderson Foley; daughter-in-law, Cindy Henderson; son-in-law, Pete Foley; grandchildren, Patrick Henderson, Brian Foley and Doug Foley; 5 great-grandchildren, Claudia, Jake, Alexander, Georgia, and Meredith Foley; and special longtime friend and caregiver, Lucy Reid, He was predeceased by his brothers, Charles J. and J. Wesley Henderson and a sister, Martha Henderson Honess.
The family wishes to thank caregivers Mary Williams, Brenda Cathey and Deborah Thomas, and Hospice Charlotte Region for their kindness and compassionate service.
A small private service will be held for the family. The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 15, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Sharon Room at Sharon Towers, 5100 Sharon Road, Charlotte NC.
