Douglas Smoak CHARLOTTE - Douglas Gene Smoak, age 78, of Charlotte, passed away January 24, 2013, at Carolinas Medical Center. Born on May 16, 1934, in Bamberg County, SC, Doug was the son of the late Eugene Smoak and Rudell Ayer Smoak. After graduating from Estill High School in 1952, Doug left the peanut fields of Denmark for the electronic field in the city. After attending seminary for a year, he moved to Charleston, SC, soon leaving there for Charlotte to begin his career with Western Union. Doug was a member of Westside Church of Christ since shortly after coming to Charlotte in the early '60s. He remained a steadfast member until poor health kept him at home. Doug is survived by his wife, Lois P. Smoak of the home; his son, David A. Smoak and his wife, Derann of Fort Mill, SC; two grandchildren, Jennifer Smoak Sutton and her husband, Jeremy, of Charlotte and Meghan E. Smoak of Fort Mill, SC; and one great-granddaughter, Annabelle Ayer Sutton. Doug is also survived by his step-children, Jeff Winters and his wife Barbara, and Jackie Winters, both of Morehead, KY, Jon Winters and his wife Jada, of Gastonia, NC; and Mattie Lory, of Indian Trail, NC. Step-grandchildren include Jonathan and Jarrett Winters, Ian Winters and Scottie O'Neal. Douglas will also be missed by his surviving siblings, Ray Smoak and his wife Pee Wee of Estill, SC, Frank Platt and his wife Hong, Ronnie Platt and his wife Janice, and Wilbur Platt and his wife Cheryl, all of Denmark, SC. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Douglas was predeceased by his step-father, Frank H. Platt, Jr.; his sister, Scarlett Smoak Hutto; step-son, Joe Stewart; and his beloved Uncle Wilbur and Aunt Demaris Trowell of Estill, SC. Doug was a gentle soul who loved animals, enjoyed photography and electronics, bluegrass music and scouring the thrift stores for a great bargain - he will be missed. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 28th at 11:00a.m. at Forest Lawn West Funeral Home, 4601 Freedom Drive, Charlotte. The family will receive visitors for one hour prior to the service.
