Elizabeth Ann Bertini CHARLOTTE - Elizabeth Ann Bertini, 89, formerly of Charlotte, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at Brightmoor Hospice in Griffin, Georgia. Ann was born April 13, 1924, to Robert James and Elizabeth Nancy Shepherd Smith in Charlotte where she spent her childhood and most of her adult life. She moved to Griffin to be near her daughter, Mary, about seven years ago. A 1942 graduate of Central High School, Ann attended Converse College and Queens College. She was a lifelong member of Myers Park Presbyterian Church, and attended Griffin First United Methodist Church. During her career, she served as a Welcome Wagon hostess in Roanoke, Virginia, and worked for many years as a senior district manager for Field Enterprises, publisher of World Book Encyclopedia. At age 62, she became Senior Citizens Coordinator at Providence Baptist Church, a position she held for about 18 years. An avid canasta player, dog lover and sports fan, Ann enthusiastically pulled for the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Bobcats and the Atlanta Braves. She is survived by her older brother, Robert James Smith Jr., and his wife, Betty Scott, of Charlotte; son Robert Hines Bertini Jr. and his wife, Olivia, of Dublin, Ohio; daughter Mary Elizabeth Bickers Murphy, and her husband, Mark, of Griffin; grandson Robert Scott Bertini and his wife, Sarah, of Knoxville, Tenn.; granddaughter Elizabeth "Betsy" Collette Clark and her husband, Jay, of Griffin; and great-grandson Collin Davis Clark. Other survivors include Margaret Keitt Smith of LaGrange, Ky., wife of the Rev. Harvey Howard Smith, Ann's younger brother who preceded her in death; and three nieces and one nephew and their families. A memorial service will be held at Harry & Bryant's Chapel in the Oaks at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26. The family will receive guests at the funeral home following the service. Private interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Myers Park Presbyterian Church or Griffin First United Methodist Church.
