Ella West Cushman "Boo" CHARLOTTE - An authentic Southern Belle, lover of all things golf, beach and seafood, and matriarch to a dynasty of love, died Tuesday, October 29, 2013, at her home in Charlotte, NC. Boo, a nickname branded her in childhood, was born March 25, 1924 in New Orleans, LA. She lost her own mother at a tender age, and weathered the Great Depression under the guidance of her two aunts, while her father worked tirelessly on the waters of the Mississippi. She married her first love, Jack West, in 1944. She and Jack made Charlotte their home in the post war boom. Six children and 43 years later, Jack died suddenly in 1987. Fiercely independent and a survivor by nature, Boo rebuilt her life and grew in her identity. She remarried four years later in 1991 to the second love of her life, John Cushman. They shared a passion for golf, travel and the coast. Their idyllic life continued until Boo succumbed to cancer. Boo leaves quite a legacy behind in her children, Bill West of Stone Mountain, GA, Dick West of Bowen Island, Canada, Mike West of Plano, TX, Jackie West Barnes of New Bern, NC, Jo Gibbons of Leesburg, VA, and Judy Farrell of Charlotte; thirteen grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren that were her pride and joy. She is also survived by two step-daughters, Brooks Cushman and Paula Cushman, both of Middlebrook, VA. Boo is beloved by family and friends for her warmth, integrity, determination, resilience, uncomplaining and impossibly positive spirit. She will be remembered for her enduring parting, spoken in a sweet, slow, Southern drawl - Love You Plenty. We Love You Plenty, too, Boo! A service celebrating Boo's life will be held at Christ Church on Saturday, November 9th at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ Church Foundation, 1412 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28207. Condolences may be offered at www.HarryandBryantFuneralHome.com.
