I was thinking of Hoyt today and did an internet search. I´m not sure if this message will get to you. I was Hoyt´s tutor from about 1964-1970. At first, his mother June drove him to my house on Hassel Place I think twice a week in the afternoons. When he was old enough to drive, he drove himself, even after we moved to Carriagehouse Lane, just off Old Providence Rd and came in the evenings. Hoyt and I worked on specific homework assignments, but also on his study habits, understanding math concepts, ways to read and remember key points in his history classes, and how to read literature and write effective papers. I had taught English and foreign languages at Myers Park High School before I stopped to have children. I had 3 little boys when Hoyt started coming to me for tutoring, and had a girl in 1968. I often tutored with a baby on my lap. Hoyt was in my home so often that he became like one of the family. My boys always looked forward to seeing him. He was a willing student, and responded well to my coaching. I have fond memories of him. When the Beatles first became popular, he asked me who was my favorite Beatle? His was Paul, if I remember correctly. As he got into high school, he was always hungry when he got to my house and would ask if I had anything to eat. Often in the evenings when he came my family would have finished dinner but the leftovers were still in pots on the stove and Hoyt would finish them off, even though he had had supper at home. (This prepared me for the time that my own teen aged boys would be ravenously hungry all the time.) our tutoring stopped when Hoyt went to Wofford but our friendship continued. In about 1973 I think, I planned a big party for my husband´s birthday. I had invited about 30 friends to our home on Carriagehouse. I called Hoyt and asked him if he would be our bartender for the party and he agreed. Streaking was a popular theme back then, and I thought it might be fun to arrange something without warning my friends in advance. so I called Hoyt again and said, "Hoyt, I don´t know how to ask you this, but do you know anybody who would streak my party?" Hoyt replied, "Mrs. Alexander, I don´t know how to tell you this but EVERYBODY I know would be willing to streak your party. How many do you want?" I said, "Only one, Hoyt, and I´ll pay them for it." Then he said, "Male or female?" I said male. So it was arranged, and sure enough at 5he appointed time the streaker arrived (a guy with longish hair wearing only a hat and sneakers, trotted through my house, grabbed a drink from Hoyt at the bar, and left by the back door. For weeks afterward my party was the talk of Charlotte. I even had a stranger stop me on Tryon St and say "Aren´t you Emmie Alexander? Will you invite me to your next party?"
I´ll always remember Hoyt.
