Jack Witmore 1925 - 2013 MATTHEWS - Jack Witmore of Matthews passed away on Tuesday, December 24, 2013, at Plantation Estates in Matthews. Mr. Witmore was born in Wingate, NC on August 23, 1925. He was the son of the late Robert Lee Witmore and Atha Mae Griffin Witmore of Wingate. Jack graduated from Wingate High School, followed by four years in the United States Navy during World War II. After the war, he attended and graduated from Wingate College. Jack worked for Grinnell Corporation for 20 years and retired from BCF Piping as a purchasing agent. He was a member of Matthews Lions Club, Scottish Rite, and Oasis Temple, and a charter member of the American Legion of Wingate, NC. He was a member of Providence Baptist Church for 56 years. Jack is survived by his wife, Betty Kennedy Witmore, and two daughters, Pamela Sheldon and her husband Mike of Atlanta, GA and Kathy McElwee and her husband Frank of Matthews, NC. He had two grandsons and two granddaughters who affectionately knew him as Papa Jack; Robert McElwee of Newport News, VA; Ross McElwee of Matthews, NC; and Elizabeth and Katherine Sheldon of Atlanta, GA. Jack's sister is Virginia Rainwater of Matthews, and he was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters. A memorial service will be held at Providence Baptist Church on Monday, December 30, 2013 at 2:00 pm. Dr. Al Cadenhead and Dr. David Jordan will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Providence Baptist Church, 4921 Randolph Rd., Charlotte, NC, 28211, or to Novant Health Hospice & Palliative Care, P.O. Box 33549, Charlotte, NC, 28233.
