Tom Butts CHARLOTTE - Mr. James Thomas "Tom" Butts III, 50, died Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at his home. Visitation will be from Noon to 1 p.m. on Sunday, December 15, 2013 at Higher Ground Church, 8365 Possum Hollow Road, Indian Land, S.C. The funeral will follow at 1 p.m., with Pastor Steve Jacks officiating. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 3:30 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville, N.C. Mr. Butts was born in Raleigh, N.C and graduated from North Iredell High School. He served ten years in the U.S. Navy and later retired as a Master Sergeant in the Air National Guard after 14 years of service. Tom earned his Bachelors Degree from University of the State of New York and received his advanced turbine maintenance certificate through studies while serving in the U.S. Air Force. He was pursuing an advanced degree in Electro-Mechanical Engineering at Central Piedmont Community College and was employed with Qualitest. Mr. Butts attended Higher Ground Church in Indian Land. He enjoyed disc golf and was an avid fan of the Miami Dolphins. Surviving are his wife, Stephanie Hedrick Butts; his mother and step-father, Jeanne Winstead and Jim Robertson of Sun City Carolina Lakes, S.C.; his father and step-mother, James, Jr. and Bonnie Bowling Butts of Oxford, N.C.; his sons, Michael (Betsy) Butts of Livingston, Tenn., Matthew Butts of Menominee, Mich., and Steven Butts of Elgin, Ill.; and their mother, Lorri Butts of Elgin, Ill.; his step-children, Michael (Hollie), Stephan and Nicole Marcille, all of Kansas City, Mo.; his brother, Ken (Tonya) Butts of Concord, N.C.; his step-sister, Michelle (David) Rogers, of Charlotte, N.C.; step-brother, Jimmy (Leigh) Robertson of Dallas, Tex.; four grandchildren; six nieces and a nephew..
