Lewis Winston Sykes
'Bubba'
Mr. Sykes, 83, of Charlotte, NC, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died Thursday, June 2, 2011 at his residence. He was born March 31, 1928 in Wilmington, NC, the son of the late Leo E. Sykes and Lalia Williams Sykes. Lewis graduated from high school in Wilmington, NC and was awarded a football scholarship to Georgia Tech where he played quarterback under coach Bobby Dodd. He graduated in the Class of 1951 with a BS Degree in Industrial Management and was then commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the USAF, attended flight training school, and flew 55 combat missions in the Korean War as an F-86 Sabre Jet fighter pilot. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. When he returned to the States, he served as a test pilot in the USAF.
Lewis's career began in Medical Management at Duke University Medical Center. He was clinic administrator for the Miller Orthopaedic Clinic in Charlotte for 25 years. He was president of the Charlotte Medical Group Managers Association, president of the NC Medical Group Managers Association, and president and fellow of the American College of Medical Group Administrators. He served on the Board of Trustees of the NC Baptist Hospitals, Inc. and as past president of the Dilworth Rotary Club. Lewis was a trustee, deacon and Sunday School teacher in his churches. He enjoyed golfing, woodworking, and the NC mountains; however, first in his life was God and his family.
Lewis is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Virginia Gregg Sykes; sons, David Gregg Sykes and wife, Rusty of Charlotte, and Richard Scott Sykes, M.D. and wife, Deb of Hillsborough, NC; devoted grandson, Justin Scott Sykes and wife, Morgan of Charlotte, and granddaughter, Leah Michelle Sykes of Hillsborough, NC; great grandsons, Peyton Sykes and Collin Sykes of Charlotte; and his niece, Nancy Thompson Cullen of Charlotte. He is predeceased by his sister, Mavis Sykes Thompson.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at Myers Park Baptist Church, 1900 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC 28207 with the Rev. Dr. H. Stephen Shoemaker officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. Interment will be private for the family at Sharon Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Myers Park Baptist Church Missions and Hospice & Palliative Care - Charlotte Region.
