Phylicia Barnes Memoriam

A pair of memorial services are planned April 28 for Phylicia Barnes, the Monroe teen whose body was discovered last week in Maryland.

One service will be at a church in Monroe, organized by friends and classmates at Union Academy, where Barnes was a 16-year-old high school senior. The other will be at the Baltimore apartment complex where she was last seen.

Barnes disappeared four months ago today, Dec. 28, and was last seen at her half-sister's apartment. Police in Maryland conducted several searches, without success. Finally, Barnes' body was discovered last week in the Susquehanna River, about 45 miles northeast of where she disappeared.

Police have not determined how Barnes died.

The Monroe service is planned for 6:30 p.m. at Lee Park Baptist Church, 2505 Morgan Mill Road. All are invited.

In Baltimore, a 7 p.m. vigil is planned outside the Reistertown Square Apartments, where Barnes was last seen.

My Dearest Loved one:

I received your Letter from Heaven,

It made the teardrops fall.

But knowing you’re with God above,

Sweet memories, I will recall.

I know that you are with me,

For I feel your presence near.

And if I listen closely,

Your voice I then can hear.

I know you’re watching o’er me,

As you promised you would do.

And when I feel so saddened,

It’s your letter that sees me through.

When I lay in bed at night,

The day’s chores put to flight,

I truly feel your presence,

Like a warm and glowing light.

The rocky roads you mentioned,

And the hills that I must climb;

I’ve done exactly what you said,

By taking one day at a time.

I’ve tried to help others,

Who are in sorrow and in pain.

And now I am contented,

My day was not in vain.

I’ll lend a hand, as you have said

When someone is feeling low.

I’ll pray for them and be here,

‘Till on their way they go.

And when it’s time for me to go,

To join you in heaven high.

My wings I shall spread wide,

To my home up in the sky.

To the Sallis & Barnes Family,

May the light of God shine on you during this time of bereavement. Phylicia will always be in your hearts and thoughts. As my pastor says all the time "to be absent from the body means to be present with the Lord" Time can and will heal all wounds. I will continue praying for both families as I have ever since Phylicia went missing. God bless and hold onto God's unchanging hands.

My heart goes out to the family. I have a daughter around Phylicia's age and I cannot hold her tight enough! Each moment she is away from me I start to worry. I have to call her every minute of the day to comfort myself. I can't imagine my life without her. To the family: Your baby girl is resting and surely in a better place. I know it hurts now, but believe me when I say that God has control. He makes no mistakes! I will always keep your family in my prayers. With tears in my eyes as I type...God you have another ANGEL!

My brother said sadly that they had found "our" Phylicia, and his comment reflected that this child became the loved one of so many people who didn't know her, but who cared deeply for her. I have no adequate words to express the bewilderment of seeing Phylicia's radiant smile over and over again while realizing that somebody stole not only that smile but her life.

No bond is as great as that between a parent and child. Our deepest condolences are with you as you grieve. You can find comfort in knowing that when Jesus was on earth, he demonstrated on a small scale what his Kingdom rule will do on a larger scale. He resurrected many loved ones and reunited them with their families (John 11: 43, 44). Jesus did this because he wanted to. As a result, there is a wonderful future hope that is made available to each and every one of us. And we pray that the Barnes family is able to see Phylicia once again in the near future.

May you continue to find comfort and peace.

Dear Barnes and Sallis famiies,

First of all, may the blessings and love of the Creator be with you henceforth, now and forever, amen. I live just outside Washington, DC, but grew up in Monroe. I was so saddened when I read this story, because it felt like it was happening to my family, my extended family in Monroe. To both parents, I send you my love and support in your hours of need, and want you to know that everyday, I'm extending a great big loving hug to you. God bless you and keep you in his strength.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences for your loss. Such a beautiful young lady. We live in critical times, hard to deal with (2nd Timothy 3:1-5). Ms Sallis,

Please accept my heartfelt sympathy for the loss of your beautiful daughter. I have kept up with her story from the moment I heard of her disappearance. I hoped and prayed that the Good Lord would bring your daughter home to you safe and unharmed. Sadly, this did not happen and my heart aches for you and your family along with so many others near and afar. May God continue to bless you and your family in your hour of bereavement.Just trust and believe that you will see her beautiful face again one day.

April 29, 2011

To Ms. Sallis,
Please accept my heartfelt sympathy for the loss of your daughter. I didn't know her personally, but I feel like I did because of the type of person you described her as being. She was a beautiful young woman. It touched my heart when I first heard about her disappearance and I hoped and prayed every day that she would be found safe. There is so much wickedness in this world, but God said the wicked would soon be cut down. I know you loved her, but God loved her more.
Just trust and believe that you will see her again one day.

Carolyn Barnes

April 28, 2011

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...

but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.

I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.

Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.

Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.

That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,

God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.

As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.

I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.

There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.

And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.

And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.

God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years

because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.

But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.

Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.

But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.

But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.

I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;

but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...

that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,

then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."

And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,

knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,

just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.

When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;

I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,

remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

April 28, 2011

I am home in Heaven, dear ones;
Oh, so happy and so bright!
There is perfect joy and beauty
In this everlasting light.

All the pain and suffering is over
Every restless tossing passed;
I am now at peace forever,
Safely home in Heaven at last.

Did you wonder I so calmly
Trod the valley of the shade?
Oh! but Jesus' love illumined
Every dark and fearful glade.

And he came Himself to meet me
In that way so hard to tread
And with Jesus' arm to lean on
Could I have one doubt or dread?

Then you must not grieve so sorely,
For I love you dearly still:
Try to look beyond earth's shadows,
Pray to trust our Father's will.

There is still work waiting for you,
So you must not idly stand;
Do it now, while life remaineth-
You shall rest in Jesus' land.

When that work is completed,
He will gently call you home;
Oh, the rapture of that meeting,
Oh, the joy to see you come!
