Dear Mary and Willie,
A friend of Milton's in high school, I hadn't seen him for 15+ years until I moved to Seattle. He had been a lanky tall fellow. Yet even now as a big bear of a man, I recognized his smile instantly across the room and we had a chance to reconnect. He was a friend to me even when I was an awkward teen, and I'll always remember the unique vim and vigor he brought to life and those around him. Please accept my deep condolences and know that your son's memory is very much alive among his friends far and wide.

Dear Artis Family,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I met Milton at UNC. He was a great friend. He always knew how to make people laugh when they were down and was a true southern gentleman. He will be sorely missed. May God bless you during this time of sorrow.
Sincerely,
February 3, 2010
Mary,
It has been years and years and years... Yet the years have not so dulled my memories that I cannot identify with your pain and loss. Hope you have a strong faith that will help sustain you in this difficult time of adjustment.

Dear Willie and Mary,
I was very sorry to hear that Milton had passed. Unfortunately, I did not learn of the tragic news until after Milton's funeral. Please know that my mother, my sisters and I hope that you can find peace as the days pass, remembering all the good times you shared with your son. Dear Artis Family,
I was a friend and co-worker of Milton here in Seattle over the last few years. Milton added so much joy to my life and many others. He was so much fun to be with and he always made me laugh. He could be so stubborn at times which made me laugh even more. I am very sad and I miss him very much. But I am sure we will all meet up with him again some day!

To The Artis Family,
Words are hard to say at a time such as this. May there be strength in knowing that God cares for us.
I did not know Milton, but I knew you as Mrs. Lawhorn and I loved you very much. You were my favorite teacher.
Even though it has been over 40 years, I have not forgotten you. I know Milton was a beautiful person because of you and your husband.
I am truly sorry to hear this news and I pray God will be with all of you during this time of grief.
My prayers are with you.

Artis, Mary and Todd,
May you find solace in the love of family and friends that surround you and in the many pleasant memories of Milt that you have collected over the years. We will always remember the boys (Milt and Todd) coming over to play with Kevin when they were growing up. Our hearts go out to you and we will keep you in our thoughts and prayers as you move through this delicate and difficult time.
With sympathy,
K Stewart

Mom, Dad and Todd Artis; I am so sorry I can not get to Charlotte Today. I pray that my mother is able to read these words at the service:
For my Brother, Milton Artis…
No one that knows you has ever encountered you as a stranger. I remember
that first day, twenty six years ago, in Mrs. Johnson’s Sunday school class, back at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, where Kelvin McKoy introduced us. I remember our
junior year in High School…you attending Independence and I at South Mecklenburg Sr.
High School. I was taking you to a party my friends were throwing, and introducing you to that “circle” of people. I remember in both instances our mutual reaction of familiarity, comfort, and instant affinity for your warmth, and your easy-going mellowness. There was never a time where conflict, hostility, or ill-intent was more than passing moment of your personality. You are one who could always be relied on for a kind word, a compassionate ear, and benevolent wishes for each person that crossed your path…even for those who did not share the same enlightened and evolved caliber of personal character that you exhibit.
I regret the fact that I allowed twenty years to pass between us without face to face
or voice to voice contact. I regret the fact that I did not make the opportunity to
get to know you, and the daily “ins” and “outs” of your life in Seattle, and to become better acquainted with the people close to you. And even with that being the case, when I spoke to you two Christmas’s ago at the Charlotte reception for my new wife and I, it was like no time at all had passed. You were the same positive, encouraging, and HILARIOUS guy I had known from the time I was twelve years old. I want to thank you, on behalf of everyone gathered here at your home-going ceremony, and for those of us that want desperately to be there to celebrate you, but can not. I thank you for being the kind of person who makes an impact…a life-long impact that truly builds a person UP, in whatever his or her pursuit to contentment may entail. I thank you for being the kind of person that is one who makes the effort to have his light shine, in a world that seems to be growing darker, and darker by the day. And now, as you have ascended into the Grace of Eternity, and are at home with Our Eternal Creator, I Thank God for You and all that you have meant to everyone that has been blessed with the privilege of knowing you.
Be at Peace, My Brother… and I will see you again one day in Glory.
