While doing some research, I happened upon Calvin's name and then this website. Calvin, I went to grade school with you in Fairfield, Iowa. To your entire, family, please know I am so sorry for your loss and pray you all feel the comfort of the Holy Spirit as you live with this loss. My husband (Harlo) and I lost a son (also and Eagle Scout) in 2003 at age 17. A dear Christian counselor told us the first five years are the hardest! Please give yourself time and grace. Your loss is enormous. Carey did much in his life and loved and was loved. What a wonderful smile. God bless you all and may you see evidence of God's love for you in both large and small ways. To Cal and family: I am so sorry for the loss of your son. I wasn't aware he was ill. In the pictures of him it shines through how strong, positive and dedicated he was to helping young people with cancer. He was a good man. The world was definitely a better place with him in it. I pray that God comforts and strengthens you now and always.

Sorry for your loss...how can we help remember?

We want to know Officer Scovel's favorite color or plant. We plant favorite plants in our community garden to honor our hero's. Tweet your plant request 4 our community garden. We don't use his name unless the family says it is OK. But we will say in honor of a local hero, or something tactful and cordial. Proceeds given2 needy. I am very sensitive and actually cried thinking how young he was. My staff and I wish to honor him and all our hero's with our community garden. So much we share your grief. We have lost loved ones too. Gentle hugs.....Kandle

Im sitting in Carey's old room at my house and I can't help but cry. Carey and I lived together before he was married and after the academy. He showed me the ring before he gave it to Alex and was so excited. We graduate CMPD class 152 together and were finally Police Officers. We were together here when we found out about the cancer and i told him he would be fine because i knew he was strong and was a fighter; he truly had a drive like no other. I'm proud to say Carey was my friend. I will never forget you my friend and we will meet again. Godspeed my friend.

Words cannot express our sadness upon learning of Carey's passing. We cherish our memories of watching Carey grow from a young inquisitive Cub Scout into a proud Eagle. He was a wonderful young man from a wonderful family who will be missed by so many who had the privilege of knowing and loving him in his all too brief time here with us.

Our love, support and prayers are with all of you - Carey was simply the Best.

Carey,

I trust that you can see what I'm writing to you, my dearest cousin Carey. The very sheer moment I heard your decline, I just wanted nothing less than to be able to drop everything, and be there with you. It still feels like a nightmare, and I often comfort myself by saying "It's just a dream, it's just a dream....this isn't real. We'll wake up tomorrow, and everything will be fine...."

I love you dearly, Carey....I always have, and I ALWAYS, always will. You're with Mabie and Grandpa now, Carey. They will take good care of you, I know that you are not alone. We will see you again, one day.

Aunt Kiki, Uncle Cal, and cousin Tom, I don't even know where to begin as far as words are concerned. I will see you in a few days.....you are at the forefront of my thoughts....please know this. I love you guys, from the very core of my heart.

I worked with Carey in the Independence Division where he is missed dearly. Anytime I saw Carey he always had the biggest smile! His attitude was amazing. He never hesitated to make you laugh and was always such a joy to be around. His outlook was always so positive I think many of us did not fully understand the battle he was waging because he never complained. He was a warrior!! I will always remember how brave he fought this battle. RIP Officer Scovel. You are dearly missed.

I was so saddened to learn of Carey's passing. This kind of sadness affects you as his parents, his spouse, hIs extended family and friends, and makes all of us realize that we are on this earth for but a fleeting time. We also realize that for the moment there is little we can say or do to mitigate the life altering pain and grief you are feeling.
