Charles Lawing, Sr. "Wayne" CHARLOTTE - Charles "Wayne" Lawing, Sr., died peacefully at his home on Friday, Feb. 21, 2014. He was born June 28, 1945, the son of the late Byron Eugene Lawing and Charlene McGarity Lawing. Wayne graduated from West Meck High School and coached baseball and basketball for the West Meck Optimist Club. He served ten years in the Army National Guard and was the owner of the Custom Rug Shop. He enjoyed playing golf and spending time at the beach. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 45 years, Phyllis Newton Lawing, sons, Chuck Lawing and wife Barbara of Cherryville, Phil Lawing and wife Melissa of Badin; grandchildren, Savannah Lawing, Hannah Lawing, Sierra Lawing and Brian Lang; great-grandchild, Bailey Lang; brother, Bobby Lawing of Charlotte; and sister, Sandy Coley of Brooks, Ga. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, 2014, at Covenant United Methodist Church with Reverend Fredrick Bowman and Reverend David Lee officiating. Interment will follow the service in Forest Lawn West Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
