Joy Tucker Heath MONROE - Joy Tucker Heath passed away Friday, March 21, 2014. She was born in Union County, daughter of Mary Surratt Tucker and the late Lloyd Tucker. Joy was raised in Union County, and later moved to Columbia, S.C., where she taught for 25 years in Lexington/Richland, S.C. district 5. She was very recognizable to students and parents in the district for her caring and gentle approach, as well as her willingness to help children with disabilities. Professionally Joy was president of her teaching sorority (ADK) chapter. In Columbia Joy tried to make life better for others, serving as Crime Watch president, leading a successful campaign for the county to install sewage lines, publishing a neighborhood newsletter and improving general neighborhood appearance. Joy was known for her love of animals, supporting animal charities. Her friends called on her to adopt strays and place them with new owners. On moving back to Monroe, Joy quickly renewed old friendships and made new ones. Joy supported the Monroe Police Department by creating a small refreshment stop under her carport. She later completed the police department's Citizen's Academy program. Joy's final community project was to run for city council. A memorial service will be held 6:00 PM Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at High Hill Primitive Baptist Church, 2225 Concord Ave., Monroe, NC 28110. The family will visit following the service. Mrs. Heath is survived by her loving husband Robert Heath, her mother Mary Surratt Tucker, a brother Lloyd "Butch" Tucker, Jr., a sister Brenda Mitchell and her best friend Gary Anderson, all of Monroe. In lieu of flowers, memorials are asked to be made to the 1901 Brunswick Ave., Suite 100, Charlotte, NC 28207 or the animal . Online condolences may be made at www.gordonfuneralservice.com.
