George Francis Henry, Jr. GASTONIA - George Francis Henry, Jr., 84, died on June 11, 2014, at Covenant Village. He was born on March 13, 1930 to the late Anne Hornaday Henry and George Francis Henry, Sr. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years Douglas Robinson Henry; and his son, James Heyward Henry. Growing up in Clover, South Carolina, George attended Clover High School and graduated from the University of South Carolina, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. George earned the rank of Eagle Scout and The Bronze Palm. He and Douglas Robinson Henry were married on October 10, 1953. George worked for W.D. Lawson & Company and R.P. Caldwell & Company. He started Henry Fibers, Inc. in 1983 where he served as president for 31 years. George was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon and elder and attended The Henderlite Men's Bible Class; his dedicated community service included membership on the following boards of directors: Parkdale Mills, Inc., The City Club of Gastonia, where he was past president of the board; past president of The Textile Fibers and By-Products Association where he was honored as a life member; past president of The Charlotte Textile Waste Association; past president of The Mary Ellen Nelson Center; past president of the local board of First Union National Bank; actively involved in the organization of Gaston Day School where he served as board president; Heart Society board member; Schiele Museum board member; and member of The Gaston Country Club. George was recognized by Governor Jim Hunt with North Carolina's highest honor, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine. He was also awarded The Allen Sims Award and was a Paul Harris Fellow with Rotary International. Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, William S. Henry and his wife, Frances of Gastonia; George F. Henry, III and his wife, Susie of Gastonia, and Jeanne W. Quinn of Pawleys Island, SC; brother and sister-in-law, Mack H. Henry and his wife, Linda of Clover, SC; sister, Clarissa H. Craig of Gastonia. His grandchildren are William Sumter Henry, Jr., Charles Patrick Henry, George Francis Henry, IV, Hadley Montgomery Henry, Thomas Robinson Henry, Carol Anne Henry, Martha Clair Henry, Elizabeth Brianne Hough and Michael Decatur Quinn. The family would like to thank the staff of Covenant Village, Brightstar Home Health Staff, ministerial staff at First Presbyterian Church, Gaston Hospice, and especially Louise Tripplet, who has been part of the family for 35 years. The family will receive friends at Covenant Village on Friday, June 13, from 2:00 to 4:00PM. Memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. John L. Frye, Jr., Rev. Lauren S. Vanacore, and Pastor John H. Stanley at First Presbyterian Church at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 14. The family will receive friends in the church parlor immediately following the service.
