Thomas Newton Johnston GASTONIA - Thomas Newton Johnston, 73, of Covenant Village, Gastonia, passed away on Thursday, June 19, 2014. Born July 5, 1940, in Durham County, he was the son of the late Halbert M. and Florence Brawley Johnston. Mr. Johnston was a graduate of Appalachian State University where he earned an Educational Specialist Degree, St. Andrews where he earned his Bachelor's Degree and Winthrop University where he earned a Master's Degree. Mr. Johnston's passion was education and he touched many lives during his 30 year career as an educator in the Gaston County School System. He was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, Mooresville, and attended First Presbyterian Church, Dallas, NC, where he served as a church musician. Mr. Johnston is survived by special friends, Bonita King, Miriam McNeely and Roddy and Sandra D. Kerr. Prior to the service, a reception will be held at 2 PM, Sunday, June 22, 2014, at First Presbyterian Church, 249 W. McLelland Ave., Mooresville, N.C. 28115 followed by a Celebration of Life at 3 PM, with Rev. Dave Rockness officiating. Burial will follow at Glenwood Memorial Park, Mooresville. Tom's friends would like to express their sincere gratitude to Covenant Village and Hospice of Gaston County for their loving care during his time of need.
