Maude Pratt CHARLOTTE - Maude Erwin Pratt, 94, died on June 28, 2014, at Carolinas Medical Center in Pineville. She had been a longtime resident of Sharon Towers Retirement Home in Charlotte. She was the widow of Harold D. Pratt, who died in 1982. Mrs. Pratt was a beloved teacher of fifth grade at Steele Creek Elementary School for over three decades, and influenced the lives of countless students. Notably, she was a mentor to younger teachers at the start of their careers. Maude was a "liberated woman" long before the term became popular, and instilled in her students, as well as her son and daughter, the idea that we should follow our dreams regardless of society's restrictions. She was a resident of the Steele Creek Community for most of her life, and a true pillar of Central Steele Creek Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, served on several pulpit committees, and became the first woman to be elected Elder, and later Elder Emeritus. She is survived by a sister, Mary Hampton Johnston, of Camp Hill, PA; son, H. Douglas Pratt, of Cary, and daughter Julia Pratt Blackwell, of South Mills; grandchildren, Laura Elizabeth Kephart, of Gastonia, Kathryn Kephart Stacey of Charlotte, and James Lawrence Kephart, of Corvallis, OR, and great-grandson Oscar Lucas, of Gastonia; godchildren Will and Carter Patterson, Crawford Hammond, and Jennings and Lemuel Winesett, and more than a dozen nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 6-8p.m. Monday, June 30, at the McEwen-Pineville Chapel in Charlotte. Her funeral will be at Central Steele Creek Presbyterian Church on South Tryon at 2p.m., Tuesday, July 1. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the church or Sharon Towers. www.mcewenpinevillechapel.com
