Helen Leckie Smith CHARLOTTE - Helen Leckie Smith went to be with the Lord on June 23, 2014, in Nashville, Tenn. Helen was born January 1, 1929, in Sanford, and was the daughter of Henry Leckie of North Wilkesboro, and the former Norma Parker of Mooresville. After living in Sanford, Whiteville and Lumberton during her preteen years, Helen moved to Charlotte in 1940. Helen graduated from Harding High School in 1947 and attended Flora MacDonald College in Red Springs. She married Charles Roy Smith at Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church on December 31, 1949, and settled in Charlotte. Helen's passions were her family and friends and her church, Plaza Presbyterian. She was especially thankful for her Sunday school class at Plaza, where she developed many lifelong friendships. Helen was preceded in death by her parents and husband, stepfather Herman Walter Fricke of Charlotte, brother Blake Leckie of High Point, sister Nancy Leckie Patterson of China Grove, and daughter-in-law Jan Eutsler Smith of Charlotte. Surviving are sons Chuck (Teri) of Cary, Gary (Cyndy) of Nashville, and Ron (Cenie) of Charlotte; and a sister, Gail Goins of Greenville. Also surviving are nine grandchildren: Meredith (Ray) Mettetal of Houston, TX, Sarah Smith of Nashville, Katy (Martin) Penny of Nashville, Victoria (Alex) Shephard of Nashville, Trip Smith of Raleigh, Madeleine Smith of Durham, Cori Smith of Raleigh, Stacy (Jeff) Hinton of Mooresville, and Greg Robinson of Cheraw, S.C.; a nephew, Andy Leckie of Greensboro; and two nieces, Melody Leckie of Manteo and Cherie Leckie of High Point. A memorial service will be held for Helen at Plaza Presbyterian Church on Saturday July 12, 2014, at 1:00 P.M. with Rev. Tom Tate and the Rev. Bob Owens officiating. Visitation will follow in the church Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to: The Plaza Fund, Plaza Presbyterian Church, 2304 The Plaza, Charlotte, NC 28205. J.B.
