Robert A. McDonald, Jr. "Bob" CHARLOTTE - Mr. McDonald, 83, of Charlotte, died Friday, August 1, 2014, at home under Hospice care of liver cancer. He was born to Robert A. McDonald, Sr. and Pearl Odom McDonald on September 17, 1930, in Cheraw, SC. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Eula Mae Carter, and his loving wife of 56 years, Shirley Ann Hamilton McDonald. He grew up in Cheraw and moved to Charlotte in 1948. Bob was educated in the Cheraw public school system, Lamar State College of Technology, Beaumont, TX, and the University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC. He also attended various business and community colleges for special courses. Bob retired from Eastern Air Lines in 1987 after a long career that began in 1956. He served in many capacities including Agent and Management positions. He was promoted from Agent to Passenger Services Supervisor at Charlotte's Douglas Municipal Airport in 1963 and served in that capacity until 1972 when he was transferred to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport as Manager, Airport Passenger Services. He returned to Charlotte and finished his career as a Customer Services Agent. After retirement, Bob joined Southern National Bank in the Purchasing Department until the merger with BB&T in 1995. He then joined H&R Block as a tax preparer until 2000. Bob was a licensed Real Estate Agent for years but never affiliated with an agency. Bob was an avid sportsman and enjoyed all participating sports. He lettered in three sports in high school. He coached Little League Baseball and won five consecutive Little League Championships in the Westover Hills Little League in the mid-'60s. He also coached Pony League. He was a longtime member of Steele Creek Presbyterian Church where he served on several committees, including the ushering committee, mission committee, newsletter committee, executive finance committee, interim financial secretary and cemetery committee. He was a Past Member of Steele Creek Masonic Lodge No. 737 having served in 1984. He was a Certified Lecturer of The Grand Lodge of A.F. & A.M. of North Carolina having been certified since September 1982. He had served his lodge as a Trustee for 10 years and as Chairman of that committee for four years. He was named Mason of the Year for 1991. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason for 31 years and had served as an Ambassador. He had been a member of Oasis Temple of the Shrine, Charlotte, since 1977 and an associate member of Hejaz Temple, Greenville, SC. He served as Chairman, Food and Housing Committee of the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas for four years and as Treasurer for two years. He was presented with the prestigious and coveted Walt Disney Award and a Service Award by the Shrine Bowl Board of Governors in 2000. He was also a Lifetime member of York County Crescent Shrine Club of Rock Hill, SC, and an honorary member of James K. Polk Lodge No. 759, Pineville. Bob was a veteran of the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1952. He served in the 822nd Tank Battalion and in a Fort Polk, LA, Area Service Unit. He had been a member of American Legion Post 262 for 37 years. Mr. McDonald is survived by his four children and two grandchildren: daughter, Susan Gail McDonald of Beaufort, SC; sons, Russell Alan McDonald and wife, Patty Hamrick McDonald, of Charlotte, Robert Jeffrey McDonald, of Mint Hill, and James Barry McDonald and wife, Brenda Bourque McDonald, of Huntersville; and granddaughters, Chelsea Nicole and Krysta Laine McDonald, also of Huntersville. There are also many nieces and nephews who mourn his death. The family will receive friends on Monday, August 4, 2014, from 7-9 PM at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC. A service of celebration for the life of Mr. McDonald will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2014, at Steele Creek Presbyterian Church, 7407 Steele Creek Rd., Charlotte, NC at 11 AM with Rev. Valerie Phillips and Rev. John Hartman officiating. Masonic graveside service will be conducted by Brother Bob Braswell and members of Steele Creek Lodge No. 737 at Forest Lawn West Mausoleum Chapel, 4601 Freedom Dr., Charlotte, NC. Former employees of Easter Air Lines will serve as honorary pallbearers.
