Charles Evan Robinson BELMONT - Charles Evan Robinson, 84, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 27, 2014, at the Levine and Dickson Hospice House in Charlotte, NC. He was preceded in death by his wife of 28 years, Josephine Guth Robinson; brothers Richard H. Robinson and Dale Campbell; sisters Georgina Robinson and Dorothy Rosequist; parents Carl Dewy Robinson, Viola Rankin Robinson, and Fanny Elizabeth Floyd Campbell, and also his faithful companion Springer Spaniel Duchess. Mr. Robinson was born in Butler, Pennsylvania on May 30, 1930. He was active in the Butler-Armstrong, B.S.A. and worked at the home farm in addition to several hardware and paint stores while growing up. He lettered in junior and senior varsity football at Erie Technical High School. He was a 1948 graduate with honors in Pattern Making for skilled wood-craftsmanship and a recipient of honorary rank as Cadet-Aircraftsman in recognition of his wartime service in scale model design used by the U.S.N. Bureau of Aeronautics, at Erie Tech. He began his lifelong career in sales with the Sherwin Williams paint company in Erie where he became Sales Floor Manager and remained as their furniture craftsman restoration artist. In 1950 he became a drapery buyer at Trask's Department Store, also in Erie. In 1956, his love for home fashions headed to the south to Greensboro, N.C. as he began his position as drapery buyer for Morrison-Neese Furniture Company. While in Greensboro, he expanded his career into window decorating and became an active volunteer fire fighter for the Pinecroft-Sedgefield Fire District, where his wife Josie also served in the district's Ladies Auxilary. Thalhimers Department Store in Winston-Salem offered the opportunity for management as senior buyer and department head, where he quickly expanded the depth of his career as a leader in drapery, linen, home furnishings and window display art. He then spent four years with the Boston Store in Erie and headed back to the South he loved, with Ivey's to Asheville, NC and then to Greenville, SC. Ever eager to learn and grow, he chose to work as a manufacturer's representative and moved to Charlotte, NC to service a 12 state area for some of the most prestigious U.S. textile firms. He enjoyed being on the road and his clients were the finest established retail department stores. He was lovingly referred to as "Curtain Charlie" even by his family. Prior to permanent retirement, he enjoyed several years with Home Depot of Matthews, NC, was known there as "Chaz" due to his eternally positive, helpful, and loveable nature, and served in a variety of departments including being their store Santa. Mr. Robinson is survived by his daughters and their families: Charla Jo and Gary Clark of Belmont, NC, Alice Sue and Ridgie Curlis of Greenville, SC; granddaughter Abigail Lauren Wilson and husband Clay, and their twin boys Mason Evan and Talan Alexander Wilson of Taylors, SC; grandson Winston Cely and wife Erin, and their daughter Josephine Arlene Cely of Greenville, SC. Also surviving are loving nieces and nephews including Margaret Fortune and Mark Robinson. The family wishes to extend their appreciation to the loving and caring staff at Clarebridge of Monroe, the Belmont Senior Center and Levine-Dickson Hospice House.
